China Quest 2012

Shanghai & Changsha

Wednesday 23 to Monday 28 May 2012

China is an economic and political power to be reckoned with. Participants will see for themselves how the world’s most populous country is able to reach astonishing levels of growth and transformation.

Our Quest to China will visit the coastal tier 1 city of Shanghai and the budding tier 2 city of Changsha. Shanghai, with a population of 18.8 million, is one of China’s wealthiest cities, with per capita GDP of $11,500. It is the country’s commercial and financial centre and heavy government investment aims to make it one of the world’s busiest shipping centres.

In contrast, the agricultural, inland city of Changsha, birthplace of Chairman Mao, has rice production levels high enough to feed famine-risk regions in Africa and Asia. It is China’s pilot ‘two-oriented’ location and as such will be developed as an environmentally sustainable city.

Our Quest will cover the full spectrum of society, from major businesses and the highly successful entrepreneurial sector, to the challenges of poverty faced by large sections of the community. We will explore:

  • The growing global influence of China, and Chinese perspectives on the West.
  • How China’s economic and social development is affecting the attitudes and future opportunities of its people.
  • The ‘China experience’ of international companies and overseas investors.
  • Government, business and civil society.
  • The new generation of Chinese leaders and their impact on the country’s future.
  • NGOs and community workers – what life is like on the ground in China.
  • China’s vast rural economy and the contrasting fortunes of its people.
