Su Xiaojun, Quest Fellow
29-year-old university graduate Su Xiaojun spent his Quest Fellowship year in the mountainous county of Ningqiang in China, veering far from the well-trodden path to a city career pursued by so many of his peers. He is one of 119 university graduates we have identified as having the leadership potential to facilitate rural community development and bridge the urban-rural divide in China.
Working in the remote village of Tian Xingqiao, Su Xiaojun spent the first three months integrating himself into local life. He built relationships with community members, discussing critical issues and surveying the needs of hundreds of families. The most urgent problem hindering community development, he discovered, was the only dirt road in and out of the village which had become impassable for vehicles.
People from Tian Xingqiao were forced to carry their livestock and local produce on foot to sell at the nearest market, more than 5km away, losing both time and money. Many were frustrated by a problem that was seen to be the responsibility of the local government.
